Military Pensions Board Warns Pensioners of Fake WhatsApp Group Impersonating Official Channels

In an official statement, the Board categorically disowned the group, clarifying that it has absolutely no affiliation with it and does not use informal platforms like WhatsApp for official communication. Pensioners are strongly advised to avoid engaging with the group to protect themselves from potential scams.

“Deceptive Intent”: MPB Disowns Fraudulent Group

The warning was detailed in a statement released by the Public Relations Officer of the MPB, Squadron Leader Aliyu Mohammed. He described the WhatsApp group, titled “Military Pensions Board (MPB),” as a creation of unknown individuals with malicious and deceptive intent.

“The Board wishes to categorically state that it has not opened any official WhatsApp group for pensioners or veterans,” Mohammed stated. “Pensioners and members of the public are advised to disregard any false WhatsApp group fraudulently using the MPB logo to disseminate information or requests, as they do not represent the position of the Board.”

The statement stressed that informal messaging apps like WhatsApp are not used for any official correspondence, information dissemination, or requests.

Context: A Drive Towards Digital and Secure Verification

This public warning comes at a time when the MPB is actively modernizing its operations to enhance service delivery and security for retired military personnel.

In 2024, the Board partnered with eTranzact to deploy a state-of-the-art digital verification system. This initiative was designed to replace the strenuous and often costly process of physical verification, allowing aging pensioners to verify their status remotely and safely from anywhere in the world.

Speaking on the initiative, the Chairman of the Military Pensions Board, Air Vice Marshal Paul Irumheson, highlighted its importance. “The move to electronic verification is crucial for the safety and convenience of military pensioners,” he said. “This innovative solution ensures that retirees can verify their status from anywhere, significantly reducing the burden of travel and associated risks.”

The MPB concluded its statement by reassuring military retirees that their welfare remains its highest priority. The Board urges all pensioners to exercise extreme caution and to always seek clarification through official contact points whenever they encounter suspicious messages or platforms.

Relying solely on verified and official communication channels is the surest way for military pensioners to avoid falling victim to fraudulent schemes.
