Delegates at the ongoing 2025 Peoples Democratic Party(pdp) National Convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Saturday, unanimously confirmed Umaru Damagum as the substantive National Chairman of the party.
On behalf of the 3,000 delegates attending the convention, which was held in the main bowl of the Lekan Salami Stadium in Adamasingba, Ibadan, Tony Abineri, Chairman of the party’s Edo State branch, made the motion to ratify Damagum.
Edward Marshal seconded the proposal, which is allegedly in line with Section 32 of the PDP Constitution as amended.

Moving the motion, Abineri said: “I moved the motion for the ratification of Umaru Damagum as the substantive National Chairman of the party.
“This is in accordance with Section 32 of the Constitution of the PDP as amended.”
According to online reports, delegates from all states in the country are expected to vote for a new chairman during the convention on November 15 and 16.

In a related development, there are rumours that Kabiru Turaki, the Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs in Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, may also return unopposed as the PDP’s National Chairman as he is still the only contender for the post at the convention.
Recall that delegates from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, and all 36 states of the Federation are anticipated to unanimously elect Turaki as Chairman.
Speaking to the delegates, Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo State and vice-chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, praised PDP members’ dedication to the party’s expansion.

He said, “It was a long stress of battle to get to this point. The memory of the 2025 PDP Elective Convention will remain evergreen not only in the memory of the members but the entire nation as a whole.”
Details of the convention proceedings are still emerging.
