Labour Party’s 2023 Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, Defects to ADC Ahead of 2027 Election

The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The development has continued to generate reactions across the country, as Obi said his decision to move to the ADC is part of a wider plan to transform and rescue Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general election.
According to reports, Peter Obi defected to the ADC during a ceremony held in Enugu on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, where he addressed supporters and party stakeholders.
Obi said, “We are ending this year with the hope that in 2026, we will begin a rescue journey. We will resist rigging of the election by every lawful means in 2027.”
During the event, several political leaders from the Southeast geopolitical zone also declared for the ADC. They disclosed that their decision to join the party followed months of wide consultations and strategic discussions with other opposition leaders across the country. The leaders noted that their move was aimed at building a strong political front that can challenge the ruling party in the next general election.
Channels Television also reported that Obi and other Southeast leaders said they joined the ADC to “rescue Nigeria from the poor governance of the All Progressives Congress (APC).” The statement further strengthened the position that Peter Obi defects to ADC as part of a broader coalition effort to present a formidable alternative in 2027.
Meanwhile, an analyst has weighed in on the development by explaining why he believes Obi should have remained in the Labour Party. There are also reports that the former Anambra State governor is set to align with Atiku Abubakar and other opposition figures within the ADC ahead of the 2027 election.
As political activities gradually intensify across the nation, many Nigerians are closely watching how the move by Obi will reshape the opposition landscape, especially now that Peter Obi defects to ADC with a promise to lead what he described as a rescue mission for Nigeria.
