10 fantastic things to note about Ramat, the new 39- year old NERC Chairman

New NERC Chairman, Garba Ramat
President Bola Tinubu yesterday appointed Abdullahi Garba Ramat as the new chairman and chief executive officer of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

According to a statement released Thursday by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s special adviser on communications and strategy, Ramat, who presided over the Ungogo local government area (LGA) in Kano state from 2021 to 2024, would take over in an acting capacity until the Senate confirms him.

Additionally, the president named Abubakar Yusuf as NERC’s commissioner of consumer affairs and Fouad Olayinka Animashun as its commissioner of finance and management services.

Here are things to note about Ramat, the new NERC chairman:

1. Ramat was born in 1985.

2. He finished his junior secondary education at Government Technical College, Ungogo, after earning his elementary school diploma from a local community school.

3. He completed his first degree at Bayero University in Kano, where he earned a second-class upper division in Electrical Engineering, after earning his secondary school diploma from Dawakin Tofa Science College.

4. Ramat established the IT and computer-based business AG RAMAT GLOBAL LINKS in 2008 while he was a student. After furthering his studies at Jodhpur International University in India, Engr. Ramat graduated with a master’s degree in telecom.

5. He has a PhD in Strategic Management from Lincoln University.

6. He has grown AG RAMAT GLOBAL LINKS as a businessman, and it currently operates branches in Nigeria, Chad, India, and Dubai. While keeping its primary focus on computers (hardware and software) and other devices, the corporation has expanded into mining, agriculture, and import/export.

7. He ran for election to the Federal House of Assembly in 2018 as a representative of the Ungogo and Minjibir Constituency under the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) after weighing the political environment and his desire to help his community. He lost the election despite running a campaign to create the PRP.

8. He also has a number of executive certifications from prestigious universities, such as Gonzaga University (Power Transmission and Distribution Systems), Microsoft (Azure Solutions Architect Expert), Google (Workshop Administration), and Harvard University (Big Data Analytics, Civil Engagement).

9. He ran for Ungogo LGA chairman once again and served as Executive Chairman from 2021 to 2024. In order to enable the issuing of tamper-proof resident and indigenous ID cards, he promoted Nigeria’s first blockchain-based decentralised e-identity system.

10. Ramat is now to replace Sanusi Garba as the new Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
