The government of Abia State has issued a warning, claiming that certain politicians in the state have sent agents to different wards to steal information from the Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) of gullible rural residents in return for N10,000 apiece.
The alarm claims that the purportedly fraudulent operation was being carried out under the false pretence of establishing an e-wallet for empowerment that did not exist.

The goal of the sponsors and perpetrators of the criminal act, according to a special government announcement signed Monday night by Ferdinand Ekeoma, the Special Adviser to Governor Alex Otti, is to undermine the legitimacy of such PVCs and disqualify their owners from voting in the 2027 election.
“The Abia State government has implemented various empowerment programs for the youth and the elderly throughout the State and will continue to implement more empowerment without politicisation or attachment of questionable preconditions aimed at violating their rights,” the statement said, however, it left out the names of the politicians involved.

Governor Alex warned that “Government views this deliberate act of criminality as an irresponsible act and warns that any person or persons, no matter how highly placed, caught indulging in this act of criminality, directly or through agents, shall face severe consequences, beyond their imagination”.

The Abia state governor concluded by calling on residents, “especially the rural dwellers to henceforth distance themselves from any individual or group who may approach them for the purpose of obtaining information contained on their PVCs or any other personal information that may disenfranchise or endanger them in any way.”
