Prince Adewole Adebayo, leader of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has expressed strong confidence in the SDP’s readiness to present Nigerians with a credible and capable alternative to tackle the country’s pressing challenges.
Discussing the party’s vision ahead of the 2027 general elections, Adewole Adebayo emphasized that the SDP stands apart from both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing it as a principled movement grounded in integrity and clear values.
“It is rare to find a true SDP member who has interest in the APC or PDP because what they represent is totally opposite to what the SDP stands for,” he said.
Adewole Adebayo disclosed that the party is undergoing leadership reforms to ensure accountability and discipline among members.
“When I ran for president, some elements within the party worked against us. There were state chairmen who gave our agent cards to another party,” he revealed.
“In Kwara, for instance, we discovered that while we scored over 122,000 votes, only 22,000 were recorded for us. We are changing such leadership and bringing in new people,” he added.
He said the SDP is focused on building a structure rooted in patriotism and selflessness.
“It takes time to build a political party made up of people who are selfless and patriotic, those who are in politics only because they want a better country. That’s what we are doing in the SDP,” he stated.
Adewole Adebayo added that early nationalists such as Herbert Macaulay, Nnamdi Azikiwe, and Ahmadu Bello inherited a divided system, stressing that the SDP aims to correct those foundational flaws through value-based politics and people-oriented leadership.
