Anyaoku, Nwachukwu, Obi: New Constitution Vital for Nigeria’s Survival.

At a recent colloquium marking Democracy Day, prominent figures including former Commonwealth Secretary-General Emeka Anyaoku, General Ike Nwachukwu (retd), and Peter Obi advocated urgently drafting a new constitution for Nigeria. They emphasized the need for a constitution that reflects Nigeria’s diversity and effectively addresses its challenges, warning that without such reforms, the country faces potential collapse.

Anyaoku highlighted Nigeria’s historical struggle with diversity management, pointing out that previous constitutions failed to meet the nation’s needs, especially after military disruptions in 1966. He cited examples of countries like Yugoslavia and Sudan, which faced disintegration due to unresolved diversity issues, contrasting them with Canada and India, where inclusive constitutional frameworks helped maintain unity.

General Nwachukwu echoed the call for a federalist constitution that grants autonomy to federating units, ensures freedom of speech, and guarantees security and prosperity for all Nigerians. Peter Obi, representing the Labour Party, criticized the current constitution as lacking legitimacy and advocated for a constitution-making process involving democratically elected representatives and informed by past constitutional efforts.

The speakers stressed that the ongoing constitutional reform is critical to Nigeria’s stability and progress. They urged Nigerians across ethnic, religious, and regional divides to support the initiative for a new constitution that addresses the country’s longstanding challenges and fosters genuine national unity
