Edo Guber: Omobayo Welcomes 500 APC, LP Defectors for Ighodalo.
EDO STATE – Deputy Governor Godwins Omobayo has successfully welcomed over 500 defectors from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Labour Party (LP) into the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This move is expected to strengthen the PDP and boost the chances of its governorship candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, in the upcoming Edo State governorship election scheduled for September 21, 2024.
During a reception held in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, Omobayo, accompanied by key political figures such as Yekini Idaiye, member representing Akoko-Edo I in the state House of Assembly, and Tajudeen Alade, Chairman of the council, praised the defectors for their decision. He highlighted the achievements of Governor Godwin Obaseki’s administration over the past seven and a half years as a driving force behind the growing support for the PDP.
Key Points:
- PDP’s Growing Influence: Omobayo emphasized that Akoko-Edo is a stronghold for the PDP. He attributed this to the impressive record of Governor Obaseki’s administration and the strong candidacy of Ighodalo and his running mate, Osarodion Ogie. He encouraged the defectors to bring more supporters from their former parties to ensure a victory for the PDP in the upcoming election.
- Defectors’ Commitment: Ibrahim Lamidi, a former APC leader in Ward 5, and other leaders from the Labour Party expressed their confidence in the PDP’s ability to deliver democratic dividends to Dangbala and the entire Edo State. They pledged their support to secure a win for the PDP, acknowledging the positive impact of Governor Obaseki’s leadership.
- Further Defections: In addition to the initial group, Omobayo also welcomed another set of defectors in Ekpesa, led by former APC youth leader Lucky Adesina. This further bolstered the PDP’s position in the region.
The wave of defections is seen as a significant boost for the PDP as it gears up for the governorship election. With the support of these new members, the party aims to continue the development initiatives started by the current administration and solidify its influence in Edo State.
