ASUU battle to continue strike as protests spread nationwide
The members of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have announced its decision to embark on  an indefinite strike if their demands are not met by the federal government.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, August 26, as the National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU continued to lead statewide rallies in numerous institutions.

While many universities supported an indefinite action, several that had emergency congresses endorsed a strike. Newsmen were informed by a former ASUU chairman in the Lagos zone that a strike was approved by all six of the zone’s branches. According to him, members unanimously approved NEC’s decision to call a strike in the event that the government does not carry out the unmet demands.

“At our various congresses in the zone, members expressed displeasure about the attitude of the present administration to ASUU’s demands. We acknowledge the meeting of Thursday, August 28th; if nothing good comes out of it, NEC will take the appropriate step.

Prof. Idowu Kehinde, the chairman of ASUU-UNILAG, stated that due to inadequate welfare and the failure to pay three and a half months’ worth of unpaid salaries, members at different institutions are starving and teaching on empty stomachs.

According to Prof. Kehinde, the Federal Government is pressuring ASUU to go on a nationwide strike with its current stance. Before it’s too late, he urged Nigerians to urge the government to take the necessary action.
