Providing the update, the Benue State Epidemiologist Dr. Asema Msuega revealed that 18 of the suspected cases were confirmed through laboratory testing.

“Out of the 13 recorded deaths, five were from confirmed cases, while eight were classified as probable. These probable cases refer to individuals who were suspected to have Lassa fever but died before samples could be collected,” Dr. Msuega explained, noting that one of the deceased was a healthcare worker.

He further stated that in August 2025, the State Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), launched a community intervention initiative targeting Lassa fever hotspots.

The project aimed to curb the spread of the disease through rodent control, environmental sanitation, and clean-up campaigns. It also included community sensitization efforts and training programs for healthcare workers on case management and referral procedures.
