Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has declared that the state is currently under siege and has urged citizens to be on guard and to notify the proper security agencies right away of any suspicious activity.
During Mass at the Chapel of Grace, Government House, Makurdi, on Sunday, April 20, 2025, Governor Alia emphasized that everyone has a responsibility to ensure security and called on all citizens to actively assist in efforts to combat the ongoing threats.
“If you hear something, say something, it will enable security agents to respond swiftly and repel the invaders” he stressed.
The Benue governor expressed his disapproval of the increasing attacks around the state, describing them as “extremely unacceptable” and characterizing them as intentional, well-coordinated attempts by armed organizations with a clear goal to uproot people and take their ancestral lands.
He said, “We are under siege as a state. We are under attack. And those who are attacking us must have a face, must have an aim, and must have a drive. They come, they drag people out, they kill to occupy. This is extremely unacceptable,” he said.
Additionally, Gov Alia strongly cautioned politicians who are reportedly taking advantage of the deteriorating security situation for their own political gain to stop doing so.
Declaring that Benue State will not put up with acts of terror or lawlessness, regardless of the identity or background of the offenders, he strongly denounced all types of criminality.
“I invite you politicians to steer clear. Don’t be part of those attacking us. We have some machinery in place to dig deeper, to let us know who is a culprit, who is involved in the destruction of our state,” he stated.
He further stated that “A terrorist is a terrorist, irrespective of ethnicity or religion. Criminality is criminality.”
The Benue state governor urged the people of Benue to be optimistic in the face of the current difficulties, restating his steadfast dedication to bringing peace back to the entire state.
He urged citizens to pray for the victims of recent attacks, especially those who died during Holy Week in the local government districts of Ukum and Logo, drawing a moving comparison between the suffering currently facing the state and the sacrifice made by Christ.
