Vice President Kashim Shettima convened the National Economic Council (NEC), which avoided discussing the issue at its meeting at the Presidential Villa.

Additionally, Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State insisted that issue of state policing was not on the NEC’s agenda, despite the fact that attending governors observed a minute of silence in memory of the victims of the recent horrific assaults in Benue, Plateau, and Kwara states, which claimed almost 200 lives.

Recall that NEC, led by Vice President Kashim Shettima, had earlier promised that a meeting would be held to obtain a final settlement.

Uba Sani, the governor of Kaduna State, has previously stated that all 36 states were in favor of the creation of state police. He promised the public that when the Council met again, it would make a firm statement.

Governor Diri clarified, however, that while the topic of state policing was supposed to be discussed, it was postponed because of lengthy presentations on other urgent national issues.

He said, “State police was part of our agenda today, but unfortunately, because of time demands, and after a very long meeting, we have been there for a very long time now, the presentations could not get to that point. So, I assure you that in our next meeting, that issue will be exhaustively discussed.”
