President Bola Tinubu has awarded Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates the national title of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR).
Bill Gates is currently in Nigeria to discuss important health and development projects, and the conference was held in Lagos on Tuesday.
Photographs from the occasion show President Tinubu giving Gates the medal of honour. Aliko Dangote, the richest man in Africa and the founder of the Dangote Group, was also in attendance.
Bill Gates, who is the chair of the Gates Foundation, is visiting Nigeria to engage with federal and state leaders on strengthening the country’s primary healthcare system.
According to a Gates Foundation release, Gates will also speak with local scientists and partners who are supporting Nigeria’s national policy on artificial intelligence and health solutions, as well as take part in a Goalkeepers Nigeria event that is centred on Africa’s innovative future.

“From Addis Ababa, Gates will travel to Nigeria, where he will meet with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and engage with federal and state leaders to discuss Nigeria’s primary health care reforms,” the statement read.
The Foundation further stated that its dedication to strengthening ties throughout the continent is demonstrated by the opening of offices in South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, and Senegal in addition to its first African office in Ethiopia more than ten years ago.
Bill Gates’ visit comes after the Gates Foundation made a significant statement on May 8 that it will invest $200 billion over the next 20 years to promote global health and development. This was part of Gates’ personal pledge to give the Foundation “all of his wealth.”
