Security Agencies Are Invited to Implement Court Orders as the PDP Crisis Gets Worse

The PDP Crisis Was Called by Security Agencies
The National Working Committee (NWC), chaired by Amb. Umar Damagum, requested security agencies to step in, which exacerbated the leadership issue within the PDP in Nigeria. A section led by Yayari Mohammed, who continues to assert leadership of the party, is accused of violating a court order, which prompted the action.

Conflict and Charges in Leadership

Ibrahim Abdullahi, the PDP’s acting national publicity secretary, revealed during a press conference that the Damagum-led executive was compelled to request security personnel to ensure that the law was obeyed. Abdullahi charged that the Yayari Mohammed-led group was violating a court ruling that forbade Damagum from being removed from his position as acting national chairman. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has allegedly asked the Damagum group to undermine the PDP in order to prepare for the 2027 elections, which has led to criticism of this strategy.

Rule of law and court orders

Abdullahi emphasized that the Damagum-led NWC has no option but to involve law enforcement because the Yayari Mohammed faction’s activities constitute a careless disregard for the court’s ruling. He maintained that in order to preserve party integrity and prevent disputes that can endanger the PDP, compliance with court orders is essential.

Investigations and Officer Suspensions
The PDP’s internal crisis worsened when National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade, SAN, and National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba were suspended by the NWC on charges of “abuse of office and insubordination.” To look into the claims, a four-member committee was established, led by Amb. Taofeek Arapaja, Deputy National Chairman (South). Abdullahi stated that the two officials’ suspension was in accordance with the PDP’s constitution and that the committee’s inquiry must continue without intervention.

The Constitutional Framework of the PDP
Abdullahi reaffirmed that the PDP Constitution (2017 as amended) was followed in the decision to designate acting officers. Abdullahi stressed that his appointment as the acting National Publicity Secretary is lawful and that the constitution permits the temporary replacement of absent officers. He asked everyone involved to support the investigative process and denounced anyone disseminating false information against the party’s leadership.

The Reaction of Yayari Mohammed Faction
A former National Publicity Secretary and spokesperson for the faction led by Yayari Mohammed, Kola Ologbondiyan, voiced concerns regarding the security agencies’ role. He asserted that long-standing fears that the Damagum faction was collaborating with outside parties, potentially from the ruling APC, to undermine the PDP were validated by their activities. The PDP’s internal institutions were manipulated to obtain undue influence ahead of the 2027 elections, according to Ologbondiyan, who also condemned the introduction of acting positions, which he claimed were not recognized in the party’s constitution.
