Chairman of the PDP, Governors’ Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, has expressed confidence, stating that the party will remain strong and bounce back to reclaim power in 2027, despite the trail of ongoing defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

Mohammed, who is also the PDP National Convention Publicity and Communication Subcommittee chairman, told reporters on Saturday in Abuja that the party was discreetly attempting to stabilise its ranks and restore public confidence.

He acknowledged that some governors and lawmakers had recently defected to the APC, but he also pointed out that the party was still being strengthened.

“I am more than concerned about our governors leaving for the APC. But leadership is a burden. A lot of work is being done behind the scenes to keep the party united,” he said.

Mohammed claimed that in order to weaken the opposition and move Nigeria closer to a one-party regime, the APC-led federal government was employing coercive techniques.

He went on to say that the PDP was still the only legitimate platform that could reconstruct the country, pointing out that PDP administrations were responsible for the majority of the federal government’s significant accomplishments.

Mohammed stated that the party leadership was attempting to settle internal conflicts and legal actions intended to undermine preparations for the upcoming PDP convention.

In response to rumours that other PDP governors would defect, Mohammed stated that Peter Mbah, the governor of Enugu State, has not announced a decision to leave the party.

“Governor Mbah has not told us his position. It is a personal decision. Up till now, he has not told me he’s leaving,” he said.

He further debunked claims that Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara had left the PDP, describing him as a loyal member who had weathered significant challenges.

In response to rumours that former President Goodluck Jonathan was involved in a potential 2027 presidential project, Mohammed stated that the PDP was still open to accepting well-known individuals who wanted to join the party.

“People are still interested in this party, and these big names being associated with us make us happy. We are united and will come up with leadership that will be the best choice for Nigerians to put in Aso Rock, inshallah,” he said.

“If somebody goes, just like a bird, they go, they come. Please don’t blame anybody at the governor’s level; we are doing our best, but it is beyond our control,” he said.
