The Federal Ministry of Finance in FCT had its activities stopped by a protesting group of military retirees. They were protesting for their unpaid entitlements from the federal government.

Below is a list of their demands:

  • Salary increment of 20% to 28% from January to November 2024.
  • Palliatives distribution or payment from October 2023 to November 2024
  • Payment of an additional N32,000 to their pensions
  • The bulk payment of the Security Debarment Allowance
  • Refund of deductions made from the pensions of medically boarded soldiers.

The protesters turned the ministry into a protest ground as they came prepared sleeping items such as mats and blankets.

Colonel Innocent Azubuike, who was present at the protest,  described the unpaid entitlements as wicked, bearing in mind that economic hardship is biting hard. He said they were told they would be paid in November, only to be informed that the payment won’t be coming in due to a lack of cash backing.

He said, “We were told approval has been secured for the payment of our entitlements. The only thing remaining is cash backing.

“We were told to exercise patience and assured that our long-unpaid entitlements would be settled in November. November is gone, and there is no indication of when this will happen because it’s a matter with the FMoF and not the Ministry of Defence.”
