Edo Poll: INEC Assures Hitch-Free Election
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured a hitch-free conduct for the upcoming Edo governorship election. INEC National Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, emphasized the commission’s commitment to a transparent and inclusive electoral process, promising continuous efforts to enhance the credibility and inclusiveness of elections.
During the formal induction of 10 new Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) in Lagos, Yakubu addressed concerns regarding the recent flood that affected INEC’s office in Edo State, which damaged over 4000 machines. He reassured the public that INEC’s technical staff has recovered over 3500 machines and that the commission would seek additional support from neighboring states to ensure sufficient resources for the election.
Despite the flood incident, Yakubu affirmed, “It seems like it’s an off-cycle election. We will call for additional support from neighboring states, so in terms of machines, rest assured that we have enough. We are going to recover from Edo, and rest assured that we won’t suffer any encumbrances at all.”
Yakubu also advised the newly inducted RECs to familiarize themselves with the commission’s processes and procedures to effectively oversee the electoral activities in their respective states.
The 10 newly inducted RECs are:
- Mr. Abubakar Dambo – Kebbi State
- Mr. Abubakar Ma’aji-Ahmed – Bornu State
- Dr. Anugbum Onuoha – Edo State
- Mr. Ehimeke Shaka-Isha – Akwa Ibom State
- Mr. Aminu Idris – Kaduna State
- Mr. Mohammed Sadiq Abubakar – Kwara State
- Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola – Ondo State
- Dr. Olubunmi Omoseyindemi – Ekiti State
- Alhaji Shehu Wahab – Nasarawa State
- Sir Etekamba Umoren – Delta State
These new commissioners are expected to contribute significantly to the preparation and smooth conduct of the forthcoming Edo governorship election, reinforcing INEC’s dedication to a fair and effective electoral process.
