Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take decisive action against politicians or political parties engaging in premature campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Sunday Politics, a programme on Channels Television, Falana called on INEC to prosecute those violating the electoral timeline.
He also described the early commencement of campaigns for the 2027 elections as highly irregular and inappropriate.
“By the way, INEC is required to charge some of these guys before the court. Let them come to court and say, ‘Sorry, my Lord, there is no provision for punishment.
“If you fail to comply with the order of the court, you have committed contempt and you will go to jail,” Femi Falana said.
Recalls that the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project had earlier on Sunday threatened INEC to punish offenders of early campaigns or face legal action.
