Flags are lowered to half mast as the Army initiates a three-day mourning period for fallen soldiers.
The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) began a three-day national mourning on Monday for the 17 soldiers killed by angry youths in Okuama, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State. Among the casualties were Lieutenant Colonel Abdullahi Hassan Ali, the Commanding Officer of 181 Amphibious Battalion Oleh, Major Gembu Shafa, the Joint Task Force (JTF) Commander in Bomadi, as well as another Major and a Captain.
In response, flags across all military locations nationwide will be flown at half-mast.
Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Christopher Musa issued a directive to the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force to lower the flags in honor of the fallen soldiers from March 18 to March 20, 2024. This gesture signifies respect and mourning for the heroic personnel who lost their lives while serving the nation.
