Florence Eshalomi, a British-Nigerian politician, has been appointed by the British government as the United Kingdom’s Trade Envoy to Nigeria.
Eshalomi, a 44-year-old member of parliament representing the Vauxhall and Camberwell Green constituency, holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Political and International Studies with Law from Middlesex University.
Jonathan Reynolds, the UK’s Business and Trade Secretary, announced her appointment on Tuesday and also stated that the decision to appoint her was solely based on attracting foreign investment into the United Kingdom to boost economic growth.
He said, “I’ve launched a new team of trade envoys who will use their experience, expertise, and knowledge to unlock new markets around the world for British businesses, attract investment into the UK, and ultimately drive economic growth.
Eshalomi, on Tuesday, took to her X (formerly Twitter) page to speak about her appointment, saying it was an honour to have been appointed as the United Kingdom’s Trade Envoy to Nigeria.
She said, “I’m looking forward to building on my close ties with Nigeria to promote a strong and flourishing economic relationship between our two great nations.
“I am looking forward to strengthening the UK’s relationship with Nigeria to explore shared growth and opportunities for both countries.”
This makes Florence Eshalomi the second Nigerian to have ever held the post of a Trade Envoy. She had previously held offices as Member of the Lambeth Council of London (2006-2018), Member of the London Assembly (2016-2021), and Member of Parliament (2019-2024).
She is the daughter of Anthony Nosegbe and the late Maria da Silva. The eldest of three daughters in her family.
