The by-election was necessitated by the death of the constituency’s representative, Isa Dogon Yaro, who passed away on May 9, 2024.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the by-election to take place on August 16, 2025.

The NNPP primary election was held at the party’s local government secretariat in Babura, while that of the APC took place at the Duplex, also in Babura, all on Saturday.

The Chief Returning Officer for the Garki/Babura NNPP primary election, Muhammad Gako, while declaring the results after all the delegates completed casting their votes, declared Salisu Sabo the winner, after he scored a total of 114 votes cast during the election.

Sabo, in his acceptance speech, said, “I promised to work with all party members and the good people of Garki/Babura constituency to enhance secondary education and encourage voters to prioritise merit and the quality of candidates who will effectively address their needs.”

The chairman of the APC Primary Election Committee, Ismaila Gadaka, declared the election peaceful, free and fair.

He announced that Rabiu Garki emerged as the party’s flagbearer with 110 votes.

Garki thanked Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi, party leaders and members for placing their trust in him and pledged to prioritise youth employment and job creation to improve the livelihoods of his constituents, if elected.
