Green Light for Early Stages of Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Project

The Nigerian government has taken a step forward on the highly anticipated Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project. The Ministry of Environment has issued a preliminary certification, allowing for initial site clearance and planning activities.

This comes after the Ministry of Works applied for an environmental and social impact assessment in December 2023. Minister of State for Environment Iziaq Salako emphasized the importance of such assessments, stating they are legally mandated and taken very seriously.

Focus on Loopholes and Long-Term Planning

Minister Salako also acknowledged “loopholes” in the existing environmental assessment law and revealed the Ministry’s efforts to address them through the Federal Executive Council.

The preliminary certification allows for initial activities like site clearance and defining the scope of compensation for affected communities. However, Salako cautioned that this is just the first step for a large and complex project.

What This Means

While construction is not yet underway, this development shows progress on the project. The initial focus will be on preparing the designated areas and determining how individuals and communities along the route will be compensated.
