ICPC issues warning against diversion of public funds

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) has warned that any local government official found to be embezzling public funds will be prosecuted. This new local government fiscal autonomy is to be implemented countrywide.

Speaking at the opening of the Accountability and Corruption Prevention Programme for Local Governments (ACPP-LG) in Abuja on Thursday, ICPC Chairman Dr. Musa Adamu issued the warning.

To achieve this, ICPC will keep an eye on local government spending and budgets in five key areas including; financial transparency, open procurement, human resources management, corruption control, citizen participation in budget implementation.

Dr. Adamu stated that in order to guarantee that money allotted for local development are used appropriately, the program will assist in identifying and preventing financial malpractice.

He stated “This initiative aligns with the Supreme Court’s ruling on July 11, 2024, which restored full financial autonomy to local governments, ensuring direct disbursement of funds and eliminating undue state interference,”

To enforce anti-corruption rules at the local government level, the ICPC has committed to using its investigation and prosecutorial authorities. If found guilty of embezzling public monies, officials will be prosecuted and subject to harsh legal penalties.

“State governments must support local councils to ensure smooth implementation of these reforms. Civil society organizations and the media have a crucial role in raising awareness and holding local governments accountable.”
