The interior minister, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has revealed that President Bola Tinubu has authorised lifelong salaries for senior officials of the ministry’s agencies.
Tunji-Ojo revealed the information on Thursday at the 2025 ministerial retreat, according to a statement signed by PO Abraham, the ministry’s head of corporate services.
According to the minister, officials who retire with the titles of commandant-general, comptroller, or deputy controller are covered by the new policy.

“In recognition of the welfare of senior officers, the Minister announced that any officer retiring from the rank Deputy Controller/Comptroller/ Commandant-General will now receive lifetime salary benefits, a policy graciously approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the statement reads.
According to Tunji-Ojo, the action is a part of initiatives to enhance employee welfare and make sure that “those who serve the country with distinction do not retire into poverty.”
Along with clearing a backlog of more than 50,000 pending promotions during the last two years, he noted that the policy is one of the significant improvements carried out by the Tinubu administration.
“We have placed capacity and performance at the centre of officers’ progression while also prioritising mental health and welfare,” he added.
The interior minister stated that in order to compete with prestigious establishments like the Arizona Fire Academy, the government has created training manuals, made investments in capacity building, and started developing a top-notch fire academy.

Regarding service delivery, the interior minister gave the Federal Fire Service instructions to allow private sector collaborations in order to promote infrastructural growth and modernise the nation’s firefighting operations.
Tunji-Ojo thanked Tinubu for his assistance, stating that the renewed hope agenda is helping all of the ministry’s agencies.
