There are growing concerns that more patients may lose their lives following the disconnection of electricity supply to the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) by the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO).
The hospital’s management has urgently appealed to KEDCO to restore power immediately to prevent further fatalities, particularly among patients reliant on critical life support equipment.
In a statement issued by the Head of the Information Unit, Hauwa Inuwa Dutse, the hospital expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of some critically ill patients, which occurred after KEDCO abruptly cut off electricity due to outstanding bills.
The management explained that AKTH consistently settles its electricity bills from its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and also allocates part of the funds to purchase diesel for its generators to supplement KEDCO’s supply.
The Management of AKTH, in a statement signed by Hauwa Dutse, however, appealeds to KEDCO to support its healthcare delivery services to patients by restoring electricity to the hospital as it takes steps to defray outstanding bills.
However, efforts to speak to the Management of the electricity company did not yield any positive results as the its spokesperson, Bala Sani did not pick his calls.
