The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) national leader, Rabiu Kwankwaso, revealed his conditional willingess to join the All Progressives Congress (APC). He added that he will consider joining the party if his Kwankwasiyya movement was given complete recognition.
There have been several rumours that the former Kano governor would soon join the ruling party.
Speaking at his home in Kano on Friday, Kwankwaso welcomed APC members from the state’s 44 LGAs together with former political adviser to Abdullahi Ganduje Buhari Bakwana.
“I am willing to engage with the APC, but only under a clear agreement that guarantees full recognition of my political movement, the Kwankwasiyya,” he said.
“My movement and its people are paramount to me, and I cannot abandon them for any political arrangement.”
Recalling his part in founding the APC, the former presidential candidate said that he and his supporters were persecuted under Muhammadu Buhari’s rule.
“We were among the founding fathers of the APC and endured significant persecution from various security agencies while challenging the previous administration,” he said.
“Yet when the party assumed power, we received no recognition or appreciation for our sacrifices, simply because we didn’t originate from their original faction.”
The NNPP leader stated that he and his supporters are not in a frantic attempt to quit the party, but rather that his political organisation has grown into a powerful force that cannot be disregarded.
“However, we remain open to genuine partnerships with any party willing to honour the agreement and treat us as equal partners,” he said.
Kwankwaso went on to say that any partnership would only be feasible with clear and conspicuous pledges, even if the PDP came to approach him again.
