Maduekwe Appointed CEO of Climate Council.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Dr. Nkiruka Maduekwe as the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC). This appointment reflects Tinubu’s commitment to advancing Nigeria’s green industrial vision, enhancing investor confidence, and unlocking sustainable economic value through various climate finance mechanisms. The NCCC Supervisory Council will confirm the appointment.

Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, highlighted that Maduekwe, 39, will also serve as the Co-Chairperson of the Intergovernmental Committee on the National Carbon Market Activation Plan (NCMAP). Maduekwe’s extensive qualifications include a Bachelor of Law degree, a Master’s in Environmental Law & Policy from the University of Dundee (UK), and a Doctorate in Law from the University of Hull (UK). She brings over 15 years of national and international experience in climate policy development and project implementation to her new role. Previously, Maduekwe served as the Nigeria National Coordinator for Climate Parliament, a global network of legislators dedicated to addressing the climate crisis and promoting renewable energy. She was also the legal adviser to the NCCC Director-General.

Additionally, Tinubu has appointed Mr. Ibrahim Abdullahi Shelleng, 40, as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Finance & Stakeholder Engagement. Shelleng will be seconded to the NCCC Secretariat, managing Climate Finance & Stakeholder/Donor Relations. He will also assume the position of Secretary of the Intergovernmental Committee on NCMAP and serve on the Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions, as well as the Presidential Steering Committee on Project Evergreen. Shelleng holds an MBA from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and has held leadership roles in various financial institutions, including Head of Business Development for the Nigeria Mortgage Refinance Company PLC (NMR).

Furthermore, Tinubu has appointed Mr. Olamide Fagbuji, 44, as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Technology and Operations. Fagbuji will oversee the digitalization of a new open procurement process and cross-departmental procedural optimization initiative at the NCCC Secretariat. Fagbuji previously served as Special Assistant to the President on Economic Matters under the previous administration and was most recently the Technical Adviser to the Director-General of the NCCC on Policy Research and Strategy. He is recognized for his expertise as a policy analyst and computer scientist.

These appointments, which take immediate effect, underscore Tinubu’s expectation that the new appointees will leverage their expertise and discipline to advance Nigeria’s goals for green industrial development and climate action, ultimately contributing to sustainable growth and national prosperity.
