Mali and Burkina Faso terrorists are currently in Northwest Niger State – Senate

Abuja The Senate said yesterday that the pattern now has an international dimension when terrorists from Mali and Burkina Faso, acting under the guise of Lakurawa, stormed Kebbi, Sokoto, Kaduna, and other states in the north-west and Niger State in the north-central.
Only a few days had passed since the House of Representatives, the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, and other traditional elders and leaders in the north had issued a similar warning.

In order to prevent the terror group’s actions from spreading further throughout the region, the Senate requested that the military establish early warning systems to prevent further incursions and maintain presence and vigilance in the impacted villages.
However, it praised the military for responding quickly to the uprising in the north and other regions of the nation.
The federal government was tasked by the Upper Chamber to send an assessment team to the affected areas in order to assess the extent of the terrorists’ damage and ascertain the immediate relief needs of the affected families. The military was also instructed to collaborate with the communities and other security agencies.

Remember how the terrorists set fire to homes and killed around 17 people during their raid on various communities in Kebbi State approximately two weeks ago?

In remembrance of the community members who were slain during the terrorist attack, the Senate conducted a one-minute silence.

A motion titled “Urgent need for the federal government to take strict measures to stop the infiltration of a Lakurawa, a group of deadly terrorists, from establishing themselves in the Sokoto and Kebbi states in the northwest.

It was co-sponsored by Senators Adamu Aliero of the PDP of Kebbi Central and Garba Musa Maidoki of the PDP of Kebbi South, and it was sponsored by former Senate Leader Senator Yahaya Abdullahi of the PDP of Kebbi North.

“The Senate is aware that a group of terrorists from neighboring Burkina Faso and Mali, known as Lakurawa, have infiltrated the country through the Nigeria-Niger border, at Illela, Tangaza, and Silame Local Government Areas of Sokoto, and are from there, attacking communities in Augie and Arewa LGAs in Kebbi State,” Senator Abdullahi stated during his presentation.Remember that before the massive invasion of Mera, a village in Augie Local Government, on November 8, 2024, this ruthless group of terrorists had assaulted and displaced these communities, killing over 20 people and escaping with their cattle, which is worth hundreds of millions of naira. The Senate is aware that the Kebbi State administration acted quickly to help the families of the deceased and sent a delegation to the impacted areas with relief supplies.

“Aware that certain members of the House of Representatives from Kebbi State, along with Senators Adamu Aliero (Kebbi North Central), Garba Musa Maidoki (Kebbi South), and Yahaya A. Abdullahi (Kebbi North), have visited those areas to offer condolences to the victims of the attacks on behalf of the National Assembly.”
