The National President of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Prince Oluyemisi Adeaga, has inaugurated 47 shelters built to support victims of the devastating Mokwa flood disaster, which claimed over 200 lives and caused extensive property damage in Niger State.
Speaking during the unveiling ceremony in Mokwa, Adeaga emphasized that the shelters, equipped with boreholes, toilets, and bathrooms, provided by Nigerian Red Cross are designed to offer dignity, safety, and comfort to the affected families.
He further highlighted that the shelters were constructed to provide secure accommodation for displaced families, reflecting the Red Cross Society’s mission to alleviate human suffering and promote shared humanity.
“We are not just in Mokwa to respond to a disaster, but to uphold our shared humanity. Suffering anywhere is a call to action everywhere,” he said.
Also, 500 dignity kits for women and girls, and 500 non-food item packages, were distributed to affected persons.
Adeaga emphasized that the Society’s efforts goes beyond immediate response as it also focuses on mitigating future disaster through hygiene promotion, market sensitization, focus group discussions, community meetings, flood preparedness simulations, and first aid trainings.
He called on individuals and groups to continue supporting the Nigerian Red Cross humanitarian actions to make the world a better place for all.
