No to Uneven Growth! Nigerians Rally Behind Tax Reform
The former Vice President Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urge the Nigerian Lawmakers to ensure the prioritise equity and inclusivity when deliberating on the president’s tax reform bills. He also said that Nigerians are united in their demand for the reforms that do not exacerbate the country’s uneven development
Atiku made the call in a post on his official x handle on Sunday.
There are four tax reform bills passed which had passed the second reading at the senate on thursady, and were referred to the senate committe in Finance, which was chaired by the Niger East senator sani Musa for further legislative action, which also included public hearing. The sitting senate president, Godswill Akpabio, also instructed the commitee to involve the National Economic Council (NEC) The Nigerian Governors’ Forum(NGF) and the Civil Society of Organizations in the public hearing.
Bill, 2024 -SB.583; the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment)
The bills are the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill, 2024- SB.584; the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, 2024-SB.585; and the Nigeria Tax Bill, 2024 – SB.586.
The bills have been having mixed reactions from Nigerians, who are of the opinion that the bills favour some part of the country as against other parts.
Although Atiku did not mention his postion on the bills but urge the lawmarkers to follow due process.“I have followed the intense public discourse on the Tax Reform Bills with keen interest,” he wrote.
