The Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) is yet to make a decision concerning the leadership of the Labour Party (LP) following a recent Supreme Court ruling.
This was revealed to news sources on Thursday by a number of commission sources that the commission was still examining the court’s ruling.
Another official stated that INEC would not make a decision until it had seen the Certified True Copy of the judgment.
“No decision has been made yet on the Supreme Court judgment of the Labour Party,” an anonymously official stated.
“The commission needs to obtain a Certified True Copy of the Supreme Court judgement, study it carefully to determine what the court intended, before arriving at an informed decision,” the official added.
On April 4, 2025, the Supreme Court reversed a previous Court of Appeal decision that had acknowledged Julius Abure as the party’s National Chairman.

The supreme court ruled that the appeal court had no authority to hear cases involving internal parties.
However, the Supreme Court’s decision was interpreted differently. Abure claimed that the Supreme Court had not dismissed him from office, while the LP Caretaker Committee, headed by Nenadi Usman, claimed that Abure had been fired.
Following this, Dr. Alex Otti, the governor of Abia State, and Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, visited INEC headquarters in Abuja on April 9 in an attempt to shed light on the leadership crisis, during which Otti gave the electoral body a Certified True Copy of the Supreme Court’s ruling.
During the meeting, discussion included ways to improve cooperation between INEC and the LP, with a focus on maintaining democratic principles.

Meanwhile Abure affirmed on Thursday that he was still the legitimate National Chairman of the LP and cautioned Governor Otti and Obi to take the Supreme Court’s ruling seriously.
Speaking through the LP secretary, he said in part “The position of the Labour Party after critically reviewing the Supreme Court judgment delivered on the 4th of April 2025 stated as follows: The Supreme Court, contrary to speculations, actually reaffirmed the National Convention of the Party held on the 27th of March 2024 at Nnewi”,

“Consequently, we admonished Alex Otti, the Governor of Abia State, and Peter Obi, former presidential Candidate of our party in the 2023 General Election, who are the protagonists of the current division in the Party, to hear the Supreme Court loud and clear.”
