The two leaders held a private meeting to discuss key trade issues with national, continental, and global implications.

The meeting comes just two weeks before the expiration of Okonjo-Iweala’s first term as WTO Director-General on August 31, 2025, ahead of her anticipated second term starting September 1, 2025.

Recall that the former Nigerian finance minister made history in 2021 as the first African and first woman to lead the 164-nation-member WTO.

Tinubu had expressed confidence that Okonjo-Iweala’s continued leadership would strengthen the international economic organisation’s role as a critical pillar of inclusive global economic growth and good governance in the next four years.
