PDP appoints caretaker committee for South-South zone amidst leadership tussle
The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has appointed a caretaker committee to oversee the party’s activities in the south-south zone.
This development was revealed in a statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba on Friday.
This comes after a faction of the party, loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, re-elected Dan Orbih as chairman of the zone. The re-election took place during a congress in Calabar.
In attendance at the congress were Wike, the former governor of Cross River State Donald Duke along with several allies of the FCT minister.
The party’s national leadership had canceled the congress, citing that the re-elected zonal chairman was still under suspension. However, a letter from the National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, claimed that Orbih’s suspension had been lifted since October 2024.
According to Ologunagba, the caretaker committee’s composition was approved pursuant to the provisions of the PDP’s constitution. The committee is responsible for managing the party’s affairs in the zone from March 10, 2025.
Ologunagba added that the decision is aimed at preventing a vacuum and ensuring seamless management of affairs at the expiration of the present zonal executives on Sunday, 9th March, 2025
He stated that the caretaker committee is to be headed by Emma Ogidi as Chairman, with other members including; Hon. Nicholas Ayuwa, Godwin Akpan Udonta, Mrs. Bekewei Ashanti, Idehen Ebomoyi, Dame Vivia, and Ahanmise while Chief Damiete Herbert-Mille would serve as Secretary.
Ologunagba disclosed that the caretaker committee will oversee the party’s activities in the zone for a period of three months. During this time, the committee will ensure the smooth running of the party’s affairs until a new zonal executive is elected in accordance with the PDP’s constitution.
The NWC urged all party leaders, critical stakeholders, and members in the south-south zone to work together in the overall interest of the party.
