Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has urged the public to have more faith in Nigeria’s transport system in the wake of the Abuja–Kaduna train’s recent derailment.
Obi voiced concerns about passenger safety in his response to the Tuesday tragedy, highlighting the necessity of ongoing investment in vital infrastructure such as train travel.

According to the Nigerian Railway Corporation, 15 NRC crew members and 583 passengers were being transported by the train.
Additionally, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau verified that there were no fatalities from the incident but that six individuals were injured.
Peter Obi posted a condolence message for victims impacted by the incident on his X Twitter on Tuesday. The politician stated that Nigeria must keep funding rail travel because it is essential to development.

“I am deeply saddened by the news of the Abuja–Kaduna train derailment today; my heartfelt prayers are with the injured and all affected,” the post reads.
“The rail transport system is a critical component of development, and we must continue to embrace it.
“I urge the authorities to act swiftly to provide adequate medical support to the injured, ensure accountability, and restore confidence in our transport infrastructures.
“We keep all affected in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
