The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association (PETROAN) of Nigeria has applauded the federal government and the leadership of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) for allegedly running the renovated Port Harcourt refinery for nearly five months, that is 180 days stretch.

The refinery had been previously inactive for more than two decades however was restored in and reopened in November of 2024 with a loan obtained from  Afreximbank and executed by Tecnimont Nigeria Ltd , a subsidiary of the mother company Maire Tecnimont Group.

Following the rehabilitation and launch, PETRAON’s  national publicity secretary , Joseph Obele applauded Tecnimont for their professionalism and expertise in delivering a world standard rehabilitation project. The association also praised the host communities for the understanding during the rehabilitation project.

In a statement revealing the 180 day milestone,  PETROAN stated “The refinery which was commissioned in October 2024, has been running continuously for 189 days , up to March, a remarkable feat that underscores the effectiveness of the rehabilitation project ”

“PETROAN is pleased to note that its members are currently leading diesel and kerosene from the refinery, while NNPCL retail marketers are leading PMS. This development has not only ensured a steady supply of petroleum products but has also helped to eliminate the circulation of fake kerosene and diesel in the market”.

PETROAN  also praised Ibrahim Onoja, the Managing Director of the Port Harcourt refinery for his commitment towards ensuring the successful renovation and operation of the refinery.

PETROAN wishes to extend special appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for making funds available for the rehabilitation of the refinery; the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, for his supervision and guidance throughout the rehabilitation process; the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL, Mele Kyari, for his leadership and commitment to the project; and the Managing Director of NNPC Retail Ltd, Hubb Stockman, for the effective marketing of all the products from the refinery.”

The Nigerian midstream and downstream and petroleum regulatory authority also received recognition for its effective regulation and guidance which helped ensure the refinery’s safe and efficient operations.
