Reason for Postponement of Enugu State Constituency Rerun Election
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the postponement of the Enugu South 1 State Constituency rerun election due to security reasons. INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Chukwuemeka Chukwu, stated that the election, initially set for June 8, was postponed after consulting stakeholders. A new date will be announced later.
Dr. Chukwu emphasized that misinformation had been circulating, falsely claiming the election had been secretly held. The March 18, 2023, election winner, Labour Party’s Mr. Bright Ngene, was nullified for being inconclusive, making this the third attempt to hold the rerun.
On Saturday, despite early voter turnout, no INEC officials were present at the polling units. The Labour Party candidate, Mr. Ngene, expressed disappointment over the lack of communication, while the PDP candidate, Mr. Sam Ngene, confirmed his party had been informed about the postponement.
