The 10th Senate’s leadership has once again changed the legislative timetable, moving the start of plenary sessions from September 23 to October 7, 2025.
An internal document signed by the Chief of Staff and sent to Senate President Chinedu Akubueze today informed newsmen of the postponement.
The National Assembly(NASS) however, has expressed disapproval of the date change because it adds two weeks to the chamber’s yearly break.
Although no formal explanation was provided, findings gathered from sources stated that the purpose of the postponement was to enable parliamentarians to fully participate in the October 1 Independence Day festivities.
Akubueze also apologised to the senators for the delayed notice in the document titled “Notice of Shift in Plenary Resumption Date.”

The notice read, “This is to respectfully inform Distinguished Senators that the resumption of plenary sitting of the Senate, earlier scheduled for Tuesday, 23rd September, 2025, has been shifted to Tuesday, 7th October, 2025.
“Any inconvenience this short notice may cause is deeply regretted. Distinguished Senators are kindly invited to note the postponement and adjust their schedules accordingly.
“Thank you for your kind understanding, and God bless.”

On July 24, the Senate adjourned plenary for its yearly break. As members of the House of Representatives had likewise taken a vacation in accordance with the legislative timetable, Senate President Godswill Akpabio at the time defended the action as an act of “chamber reciprocity.”
The most recent change will put a halt to important discussions and pending motions, such as oversight investigations into executive appointments and government spending.
