Former vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has asserted that power in the 2027 elections should remain in the southern region of Nigeria.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Wednesday, Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed reflected on his political journey, highlighting instances where he deliberately stepped back from major political contests to promote national unity and cohesion.
“I welcome the idea of power remaining in the South. That’s why, if you recall, I was inspired to run for the presidency in 2019, and in 2023, I served under His Excellency, Peter Obi as vice-presidential candidate.
“Before that, I attempted a governorship bid in Kaduna but chose to withdraw,” he said.

“I very much respect and reciprocate what I saw in Port Harcourt in 2018 there wasn’t a single candidate that could genuinely lay claim to the legacy of the Rivers, Niger and Benue. In 2023, the whole world witnessed that I did not contest a show of respect,” he said.
Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed went on to praise Peter Obi and Nyesom Wike for demonstrating restraint despite their political capital.
“Peter Obi, Wike they had the resources, the experience, and the people to contest, yet they restricted themselves. That discipline and self-restraint deserve recognition.”
“That is part of why, probably, our good friend and boss Wike is doing what he claims not to be doing in the PDP,” he stated.
