Segun Sowunmi, former spokesman to ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has praised President Bola Tinubu’s decision to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State, describing it as a sign of strong and effective leadership.

Sowunmi made the remark on Monday during an interview on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme, where he responded to questions about the political situation in the state.
“In this particular Rivers case, I do not see any other alternative except, of course, if we were told that the court agreed with the governor’s side of the Assembly, which naturally means that the other guys would have to move away, but the court did not.
“Over and above that, the court also said that there was no appropriate budget that they could spend.
“The truth of the matter is that it is one of the decisions the president took that showed that he can lead because he stepped in.
“It couldn’t have been a good decision for the side of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, at that time because obviously the State Assembly could have been left out.
“The president must have figured that if he left the State Assembly, he would tilt the balance to be more in favour of his Minister, Wike, so he played level playing ground,” Sowunmi said.
