SSANU, NASU commence indefinite strike

All members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have launched an indefinite nationwide strike, insisting on the payment of their withheld four months salaries.

The two associations have instructed their members throughout the country to “hold a joint congress in their respective campuses on Monday, October 28, 2024, and proceed on an indefinite, comprehensive and total strike action as no concession should be given in any guise”.

After numerous protests and warning strikes to get their withheld eight months salaries, no response has been forthcoming from the government. Whereas, their academic counterpart; the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have gotten theirs since October 2023.

President Muhammadu Buhari had ordered a  ‘No Work, No Pay policy’ after all the unions went on strike for eight months. But President Tinubu approved the payment of the withheld salaries to ASUU members in October 2023.

As a result of this, both SSANU and NASU feel sidelined and discriminated against. Although, in April, the then Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, said it was a “communication problem”, and assured them that they were not being discriminated against.

But it’s been over four months and the “communication problem” is still unresolved. The members of SSANU and NASU have now commenced an indefinite strike to get their eight months salaries, while refusing to be treated less than their academic counterparts.
