President Bola Tinubu has called a meeting of the Police Council and the Council of State for Thursday, October 9, 2025, to discuss other urgent national concerns as well as the growing level of insecurity in various regions of the nation.
The strategic meetings, which will take place in the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, highlight the President’s reinvigorated dedication to bolstering Nigeria’s security framework and rebuilding public trust in the face of growing security worries.
Members of both councils have been formally invited to participate, either in person or virtually, according to a statement released on Monday by Dr. Emanso Umobong, Permanent Secretary, Cabinet Affairs Office, and Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Federation.

The statement read, “The meetings aim to discuss matters of national importance and key issues affecting national security and policing. The Council of State meeting is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., while the Police Council meeting will hold at 2:00 p.m.”
The Council of State, chaired by the President, is an advisory body comprising former Presidents including Goodluck Jonathan, Obasnajo, former Heads of State, former Chief Justices of Nigeria, state governors, and the Attorney-General of the Federation . It offers advice on important policy issues, such as nominations and national security.
On the other hand, the Nigeria Police Force’s organisation, management, and operational control—including the selection and discipline of senior officers—are under the jurisdiction of the Police Council.

Presidential sources revealed that the discussions would examine the country’s security situation, assess current military operations, and explore new ways to address banditry, abduction, and intercommunal violence in several northern and central areas.

Discussions on important political and administrative issues, such as the anticipated nomination of a replacement for the departing Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, will also take place during the scheduled sessions.

Thursday’s Council of State meeting will be the second under the Tinubu-led administration and is anticipated to establish a new tone for intergovernmental coordination in addressing the country’s complex security challenges.
