Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has declared that unless his party, the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), changes its zoning system, it will not have a chance to defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
The Minister said this during a live media debate on Monday, pointing to the Party’s disregard for its constitutional restrictions in relation to the zoning of the party’s chairmanship and presidential candidatures.
This occurs as former Senate President and PDP Board of Trustees Chairman Adolphus Wabara inaugurated 38 former governors into the party’s Board of Trustees, including Samuel Ortom of Benue State and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State.
Wabara said the PDP was still very much alive and urged the new members to help lead the party towards greater success and relevance during the inauguration on Monday in Abuja.

However, Wike claimed that during the general elections of 2023, when former Vice President Atiku Abubakar emerged as the party’s presidential candidate, and chairman Iyorchia Ayu, both of whom were from the northern zone, some members of the party manipulated the party’s provisions for their own self-interest. He added that if the PDP attempted to do the same in 2027, it would fail.
Wike justified the governor’s decision, pointing out that his announcement of support for President Tinubu was not illegal, in response to recent party defections, especially by Delta State Governor Sherriff Oborevwori from PDP and other party members to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
