On Thursday, following discussions between Donald Trump’s special envoy and Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Moscow, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for a face-to-face meeting with Putin to put an end to the war.
A day earlier, Trump had praised his envoy Steve Witkoff’s discussions with Putin as “very fruitful,” but US officials had still promised to put sanctions on Moscow’s economic partners.

In a later statement, Zelensky added that European leaders had been on the phone with Trump, who said he may meet with Putin “very soon” according to The New York Times
“We in Ukraine have repeatedly said that finding real solutions can be truly effective at the level of leaders,” Zelensky wrote on social media.
“It is necessary to determine the timing for such a format and the range of issues to be addressed,” he added.

The Ukrainian leader announced Thursday morning that he has scheduled “several” talks with French and Italian officials, as well as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, for the day.
