A deadly rainstorm destroys over 500 houses and properties and displaces residents of the Ofu Local Government Area, Kogi State.
The residents of Itobe District in the Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State faced a severe rainstorm on Wednesday evening. It uprooted the roofs of houses, displaced trees from their roots, and destroyed other properties.
According to the reports, over 500 houses were affected by the rainstorm and rendered the occupants homeless.
Churches, schools, mosques, shops, and medical centres, as well as electric poles, were not left out of the destruction of the rainstorm, which was accompanied by a fierce, strong wind as it rampaged through the district.
Akwu Obaje, the Ejeh of Ofu, who visited the scenes of destruction, spoke about the whole incident and described it as a “disheartening event.”

Obaje said, “The scene is chaotic, with roofs ripped off buildings, trees uprooted, and power lines snapped. Many families have been left without shelter, and the community is in dire need of support.
“I urge the government and compassionate Nigerians to help restore hope to those who have lost their homes and means of livelihood.”
While no death was recorded, the residents have been rendered homeless, with some of them badly injured and looking for safety with their families.
Atabo Okolo, one of the victims, called for immediate help for their current, worse situation after the deadly rainstorm.
Okolo said, “We need immediate assistance to rebuild our lives. This disaster has worsened the hardship we are already facing due to economic challenges in the country.”
Another victim, Usman Gene, also described the situation as one that needs a direct and quick response as well as other agencies to their aid.
Gene said, ”We are pleading with the government and relevant agencies to work together to provide support for us and our communities to enable us to recover from the disasters.”
As at the time of this report, no official statement from the state government has been issued with regards to the rainstorm and the victims affected by it.
