Royal Drama As Olubadan Publicly Snubs Alaafin of Oyo at Inter-Faith Event (Video)

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, reportedly ignored a greeting from the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, in Ibadan, the state capital.

The scene took place on Monday at the Secretariat’s Grand Space behind the Oyo State House of Assembly, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, during a state interfaith service.

Alaafin of Oyo

The Alaafin, who was already seated, extended his hand to welcome the Olubadan as he arrived, according to a video posted by Oyo Affairs. Olubadan did not react to the gesture, though. He greeted Governor Seyi Makinde and other dignitaries before heading directly to his seat, ignoring the Alaafin’s outstretched hand.

No official statements have been issued by the palaces of the Olubadan or Alaafin regarding the event.

The incident has spurred conversations about Yoruba monarchs’ mutual respect, royal hierarchy, and customs on social media and among onlookers.

While some have called it a dramatic moment that highlights ongoing difficulties in the traditional institution of Oyo State, others advise caution, stressing the need to respect established practices and refrain from making snap judgements.

The goal of the interfaith event, which was attended by a variety of religious leaders, public servants, and traditional leaders, was to promote harmony across the state’s faiths.

Although the two monarchs have previously taken part in joint events, such as a private meeting with Governor Makinde in late 2025, this incident occurs amid ongoing discussions about seniority and positions in the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs.
