Euracare Hospital Under Spotlight: What to Know About the Clinic Where Chimamanda’s 21-Months-Old Son Died

Following allegations of medical negligence linked to the death of the 21‑month‑old son of renowned Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Euracare Hospital, a privately owned healthcare facility in Lagos and Ghana, has come under intense public and regulatory scrutiny.

The tragic incident, which occurred in early January 2026, appears to have raised what could be a scandal for the image of the clinic.

In recent development, Chimamanda’s legal team have officially petitioned Euracare Hospital alleging that their son died following medical lapses during treatment at the hospital, including concerns around sedation, monitoring, and emergency response.

Chimamanda Adichie: Scandal Erupts as Lawyers Write Euracare Hospital

In response, Euracare Hospital has denied all allegations of wrongdoing. In a public statement, the management expressed sympathy with the bereaved family but maintained that its medical team followed established clinical protocols and acted in the best interests of the child, who it said was already critically ill at the time of admission.

The Lagos State Government in response to the controversy had directed that the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) and other pertinent regulatory bodies to conduct an official investigation.

Following this directive, the doctor directly involved in the matter has reportedly been suspended until the results of investigations, and the hospital has stated that an internal assessment is underway.

Previous Allegations of Negligence

In addition to the Adichie case, concerns have been raised regarding whether Euracare had previously been the target of such accusations. While there has not been confirmed documented history such as this against Euracare hospital prior to this episode,  allegations by celebrity fashion designer Toyin Lawani has surfaced.

Toyin Lawal has also accused Euracare Hospital of medical negligence following complications from a surgery she underwent there. She shared her account on social media, detailing severe issues she reportedly faced after the procedure.

Lawani, who alleged that “most of the doctors there are not even permanent doctors”, also accused the hospital of using “international standards to lure clients”.

Toyin Lawani

While threatening to sue Euracare hospital when she’s strong, she wrote “Euracare Hospital your cup is finally full, shebi I told you people I don’t have your time yet. Don’t worry just wait for me. I’m coming.

“You go spend close to 100m for hospital & them go still mismanage your health. They thought I was joking when i said i was going to sue, but i said they should just wait first when I’m stronger i will tell my story, Still suffering the consequences from Euracare right now na another thing u go find go there, na another thing dem go carry put for ur hand.

“Till today I still can’t speak well or walk well. I had complications and started bleeding in my lungs. Had to be taken back into the theatre the next day to reoperate again, before I know I stopped breathing, They had to puncture my lungs and destroyed my vocal cords. When I lost the use of my two legs after I was sent home & I ended up back in that hospital again, I had to call the ent doc in UK. He then told them to operate for the 3rd time to take the tracheotomy tube out from my lungs and see if I can breathe myself,

Euracare Multi-specialist Hospital

Additionally, within the context of the Adichie case, the family has alleged that they became aware of prior incidents involving the same medical practitioner. These claims remain allegations and are yet to be substantiated by official findings.

As investigations continue, the Euracare hospital case has become a focal point for discussions on medical accountability in Nigeria. The outcome of the probes may not only determine liability in this specific incident but could also influence future regulatory enforcement and patient safety standards across private healthcare facilities.

Other Cases of Negligence Across Nigerian Hospital Facilities

These allegations of Negligence however are not the first of its kind as there have been reports of loss of lives over carelessness in other Nigerian medical facilities both private and government owned as well.

Late Ex BBN house mate, Rico Swavey

Notable example is the passing of ex BBN housemate Rico Swavey after alleged negligence by nurses in Doren Hospital following the accident according to the deceased’s brother among many other cases.

Lives are lost, voices are raised but they are mostly short lived and in most cases, its only a matter of time before the hospital continues operations like nothing happened, subsequently putting more lives at risk.

While the outcome of the legal petition against Euracare hospital by the Adichie family may be unpredictable in terms of the results and effect on the hospital, the entire tragedy calls for a more stringent regulation and the enforcement of caution across the health sectors.

Perhaps then and only then will Nigerians and political elites stop running to foreign countries for basic healthcare.
