For the last 13 days, the Oyo schoolchildren have remained in hostage of their abductors, while families have continued to wait in silence heavy with fear and unanswered prayers.

Yet, as the days have stretched on, what began as a local tragedy has now grown into a national question: are the lives of these innocent Oyo schoolchildren being sidelined for politics?

Parents describe sleepless nights, clutching phones that rarely ring, hoping for news that never comes. Meanwhile, communities have been left to rely on vague assurances from authorities, with little clarity on rescue progress or negotiations.

    Government Response Under Scrutiny

Officials insist that security agencies are working “round the clock” to secure the children’s release. However, the lack of visible progress has fuelled suspicion and deepened public anxiety.

Security analysts argue that such operations require caution, especially when lives are involved. Still, critics believe communication has been poorly handled, leaving families in emotional limbo.

The APC- led administration on the other hand is yet to address the situation, rather it appears to be more focused on the outcome of its presidential primaries.

    BACKSTORY…

Looking back, the recent wave of school abductions has fast become a raging security disaster for ordinary Nigerians. This crisis directly targets very young, vulnerable, and innocent children, brutally shattering their hopes for an education.

On November 20, 2025, Gunmen abducted over 50 students and members of staff from a Catholic school in Niger state- St. Mary’s School in Papiri, Agwara LGA of the state.

Following FG’s intervention and negotiations with these very bold bandits, the students eventually regained freedom. However, things appear to be visibly different with the Oyo schoolchildren incident as there’s been no tangible effort or move from the federal govt especially as the abductions came amid preparations for the APC presidential primary.

    Growing Public Frustration

Increasingly, anger is building across social media and affected communities. Many Nigerians are questioning why coordinated rescue efforts appear slow or unclear, especially when compared to the urgency often shown around political events.

For some observers, the silence feels louder than the crisis itself. Consequently, hashtags, protests, and celebrity calls online for accountability have begun to trend, reflecting a population running out of patience.

    Moral Crossroads

Beyond the politics, this moment has become a test of national empathy. Ultimately, the question many are asking is not only about rescue timelines, but about priorities.

When children remain missing for nearly two weeks with limited public updates, this leaves citizens wondering what truly comes first in moments of crisis—political optics or human lives.

As pressure mounts, Nigerians continue to watch, wait, and demand one thing above all: that the children come home safely, and without further delay.
