Insecurity: NANS disassociates from Sowore’s Take It Back Movement

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has distanced itself from the Take It Back (TIB) Movement led by activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, accusing the group of advancing political interests under the cover of activism.

NANS stated that it will not participate in any protest organised by the movement, stressing that its style of advocacy differs significantly from that of TIB.

In a statement released in Abuja, NANS President, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, alleged that the Take It Back Movement has increasingly blurred the boundaries between activism, journalism, and partisan politics, raising questions about its true intentions. He argued that the group’s activities appear more politically driven than focused on genuine advocacy for Nigerians.

Akinteye also dismissed reports challenging his student status, describing them as false and misleading. He maintained that he is a bona fide student of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, adding that the publication in question failed to verify its claims before going to press.

He further criticized the report, urging media organisations to adhere to professional standards by ensuring accuracy and fairness in their reporting.

The NANS president also alleged that the Take It Back Movement is increasingly being viewed as a political platform rather than an independent advocacy group. He claimed, without providing evidence, that some individuals have associated the movement with groups such as the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

On the recent abduction of students and teachers in parts of the country, Akinteye said NANS would not collaborate with Sowore or the Take It Back Movement in any protest relating to the incident.

However, he commended organised labour and education stakeholders, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), for their efforts in advocating for victims of kidnappings and insecurity.

He reaffirmed that NANS remains committed to demanding the safe return of abducted students and ensuring accountability from authorities regarding the protection of educational institutions.

Akinteye stressed that while the association will continue to defend the interests of Nigerian students, it will do so through peaceful and lawful means.

He concluded by reiterating NANS’ commitment to national peace and stability, insisting that the association will not support any actions that could lead to violence or public disorder.
