Just In: ASUU suspends 2 weeks strike, gives reasons

The Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU), has officially suspended its two-week warning strike, giving the Federal Government a one-month timeline to conclude the ongoing renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement and address other unresolved issues affecting the nation’s university system.

Prof. Chris Piwuna, the president of ASUU, revealed this information on Wednesday during a press conference in Abuja. He explained that the suspension came after successful interactions with the Federal Government and significant interventions from the National Assembly.

Piwuna recalled that ASUU had announced the warning strike on October 13, 2025, in response to what he called the government’s repeated refusal to address university lecturers’ welfare-related concerns and the ongoing renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement.

“When we gathered here about 10 days ago to painfully declare a warning strike, it was a decision that left us with no other choice.

He stated, “Our repeated attempts to address issues crucial to the survival of Nigeria’s public universities had been rejected by the government.”

ASUU Declares Nationwide Two-Week Warning Strike

He claims that after the strike began, the Federal Government re-engaged the union through a delegation headed by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, who met with ASUU leaders on October 16 and 18 to discuss the government’s response to the proposed renegotiated agreement.

According to the union’s president, the union acknowledged that substantial progress had been made in comparison to the pre-strike period, even though the sessions did not completely resolve all issues.

Piwuna also applauded the Senate Committees on Tertiary Education and TETFund, Labour, and Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin for their efforts in promoting communication between the two sides.
