The presidency has reaffirmed that security concerns remain a top priority on the agenda of President Bola Tinubu’s engagements, as the administration has intensified consultations with security agencies and regional partners are ongoing to address Nigeria’s persistent insecurity challenges.

Following a Sunday meeting with the president in Lagos, Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, revealed this. The Commander-in-Chief is giving top priority to resolving security challenges “once and for all,” he said.

Mr. Idris claims that the president has been working with security services on long-term peace plans since returning from Jos, where security developments were a significant emphasis.

This comes amid bandits attacks and the murders of locals in Anguwan Rukuba, Jos North, last Sunday. Reports have reported that violence had returned to other areas of Plateau State.

“He (Mr Tinubu) just came back from Jos, and security is uppermost in his mind,” Mr Idris said. “He keeps talking and discussing with the security agencies on how we can find a lasting solution and collaboration with our regional partners, collaboration with international partners to ensure that we bring lasting peace to our country.”

The minister stressed that Nigeria cannot address the issue on its own and that the administration acknowledges the global character of insecurity, especially throughout the Sahel. He cited the recent visit to Abuja by Mahamat Déby, the president of Chad, as a major step in bolstering cross-border security cooperation.

Mr. Idris added that in order to strengthen Nigeria’s security framework, the president is also collaborating closely with foreign allies including the US, the EU, and the UK. He noted that during Mr. Tinubu’s recent state visit to the UK, security played a significant role.

Beyond security, the minister claims the president remains attentive to public concerns and urged Nigerians to remain patriotic and united.

“Mr President is listening. He is a keen watcher of events,” Mr Idris stated, adding that Mr Tinubu has called on citizens to reflect and support efforts to stabilise the country.

He further revealed that the president is reviewing concerns raised by media executives in a recent meeting in Abuja, with a view to strengthening the media industry’s capacity to operate effectively.

According to the presidency, governance is still in place despite the Easter break, and Mr. Tinubu is still interacting with important stakeholders and reviewing plans to fulfil his pledges, especially those related to re-establishing national security.
